It looks like the notorious Escobar name has made its return to the headlines. This time though it isn’t the late Colombian drug kingpin Pablo Escobar that’s in the spotlight but his older brother Roberto.
Unfortunately, it isn’t because of something positive. The 73-year-old is reportedly going against one of the largest companies in the world, Apple. Let’s find out why.
iPhone X Lawsuit
According to a report by TMZ, Escobar is suing the tech giant because of security complaints about an iPhone X he bought back in 2018. The former cartel accountant isn’t too happy that someone was able to hack his phone, trace his home’s location, and then send him a threatening letter.
Escobar particularly emphasized how Apple employees assured him that the iPhone X was the most secure mobile device he could get at the time.
Given his background, Escobar’s concerns for his security are definitely justified. So, he took immediate action when the hacker, who he shared was named Diego, found out where his home is.
He reportedly ended up relocating and spending extra money for added security, not to mention the distress the hacking caused him.
All that said, Escobar is now seeking a $2.6 billion compensation.
Family Business
While the 73-year-old is waiting for the outcome of his lawsuit, he has also begun selling custom iPhone 11 Pros with gold plating.
Escobar even launched a website for the products, which he runs through the family business, Escobar Inc. Apparently, this is his way of striking the company’s bottom line.
He also shared that he would be donating the money he’ll receive from Apple in the settlement. That would be his way of giving back to people like him who felt ripped off when they paid for an ‘inferior product’.
The Other Family Business
Before he decided to go after Apple, Escobar was demanding a billion dollars from Netflix. He accused the subscription streaming platform of using content without authorization regarding its television hit series, ‘Narcos’, which chronicled the life of his late brother Pablo.
While Escobar himself isn’t portrayed in the show, it is worth noting that he actively helped his brother in running his notorious family business, the Medellin Cartel. The brothers are joined by Gustavo Gaviria, who acted as Pablo’s right-hand man.
Escobar spent over a decade in prison for his involvement in the cartel.
